So by Saturday, the next Harry Potter book will be released, killing a great deal of sixth-year fics and possibly causing an uproar rivaling that for OotP.
Given that the new canon will end up "jossing" a lot of stuff, I figure this is as good a time as any to post some ideas I had been stewing in my mind about a future!Potterverse fic.
The Concept:
30 years after the end of HP Book 7, Hogwarts receives three particular students who, in the course of their stay there, will bear witness to a fierce civil war. The three of them will learn the power to either finally unite the fragmented Wizarding Britain, or to accelerate its destruction.
The High Concept:
Suikoden III, Harry Potter style.
The POV People:
Catherine Bloom (Gryffindor): Raised by her Muggle uncle after her parents died mysteriously; hadn't even used magic until she retaliated against a mean boy with the power of her mind (read: t.k.). Has a thin, jagged scar on her forehead which she covers with her hair. Has no idea what to make of the Wizarding World, but agrees to enter Hogwarts to find out more about her parents than what her uncle knows, or is willing to tell her.
Samuel Evans (Ravenclaw): Was thrilled to learn that his parents were secretly wizards, less thrilled to (eventually) learn of his dad's reputation in the Wizarding World, and even less thrilled to learn that the only kid from his school going to Hogwarts was that weird Bloom girl. Likes most of the Hogwarts teachers, save for that favoritist Headmistress. Gets a Runic scar around his right eye at the end of his first year, giving him a whole new set of problems. Becomes Hector's rival, mainly because having a short-term to work towards helps him cope with all the changes.
Hector Zabini (Slytherin): Son of Blaise Zabini and thus the main character most directly tied to Potter's generation. Was told about what happened back then by his father, and so will usually be the first to try benefitting at history repeating itself. Gains connections on all Houses as a result of his actions on his first year. Becomes Sam's rival, partly because healthy competition helps all involved, partly because he likes the idea of being on equal terms with the Child of the Red Scar.
Supporting Characters (so far):
Richter Alberich Raus (Slytherin): Odd lad who befriends Hector and is the light-hearted, spirited one of their group. He's well liked among the other Houses, too. Becomes Seeker for his House's Quidditch team in his third year, scoring many victories thanks to his unorthodox maneuvers and Hector's planning.
Fedor Vulchanov (Slytherin): Reticent boy who also befriends Hector, he's the cautious one and the muscle in their group. Starts a school newspaper with people from other Houses.
James Evans, aka The Red Scar: Sam's dad, once the most feared wizard in Western Europe before he left it all ten years ago to lead a Muggle life. Returns to the Wizarding World after both his firstborn and the girl he was meant to look after get their Hogwarts letters. James doesn't have magic per se, but he can absorb magic from others, be it from their spells or by sucking it out of them. His scars flare up whenever he's "juiced", hence the name.
Magister Creule: High Magistrate of the Newblood Vindication Front, formed some years after the end of the Second Voldemort War by dissatisfied Death Eater victims. Might have conquered the weakened Wizarding Britain if not for the Aurors and the Red Scar. Disappeared ten years ago under mysterious circumstances.
Chris Evans: Sam's little brother, who doesn't have any magic in him. Whether that's because he's a squib or because James chose not to take any risks on him is unknown. Not that Chris would be intereste in going to Hogwarts, as it sounds about the same as any Muggle school except with more sweets.
Canon people:
I hadn't thought of the Trio's role in the story (I wanted to give them a breather and/or make amends in case they get killed off in the books), but I figured the standards (Dumbledore dies, Hagrid either dies or moves to France after marrying Maxime) and came up with this:
Minerva McGonnagal: Headmistress of Hogwarts, with all the extra titles that entails. Though lacking Dumbledore's presumed omniscience, she's made many long overdue changes to the curriculum, like adding (and fitting) art courses or assigning a Quidditch commentator from each House. She's aware that, as a Gryffindor, she may have a slight bias for her lions, but that's why she's got her Deputy Headmaster.
Severus Snape: Deputy Headmaster, Potions Master and Slytherin Head of House. Snape is still the same snarky, ill-tempered man as before, but the lack of Marauder brood has made him less unpleasant. He'll still take 50 points and give detention to any student that doesn't treat him with respect, though. Also, though his spy cover was blown in the Second Voldemort War, he still got a spying position in the pureblood-centric Knights of Walpurgis.
Neville Longbottom: DADA teacher, Gryffindor Head of House. Neville was offered an Auror apprenticeship after he left Hogwarts, and he took it, knowing he had a responsibility to the people of Britain to fulfill. As an Auror, he fought both against and alongside the Red Scar, and kept Magister Creule in check during the latter's uprisings. Following the events of 10 years ago, he retired from active duty and became a teacher. Neville is very respectful towards others (especially McGonnagal and Snape) and has made an even better teacher than Harry would have been, not that he'll ever admit it.
Draco Malfoy: Draco may or may not have joined the Death Eaters in the Second War, but his support towards victims of the NVF has restored credibility to the Malfoy name. His two daughters are at Hogwarts, being two and four years the Main Characters' seniors.
Fred and George Weasley: WWW is still around, though F+G have become recluses as, figuring they're no longer considered "young" by their target demographic, dedicated themselves to form a Willy Wonka-esque mystique around them.
Weasleys in general: there are a lot of them. So many that some people jokingly refer to Gryffindor Tower as Second Burrow. Someday, when the Wizarding World has long imploded on itself, there will still be Weasleys.

Neville and Snape are my favorite supporting characters in the books (along with Luna, who I'm not sure what she would do here besides keep running the Quibbler), so I wanted to give them good roles that were still IC.

Ever since I first heard of Suikoden III's Wheel of Heroes system, I've had a great fondness for such a plot device (see also: my MKR fic idea, which follows two opposing groups).
Also, I find it effective to play on Rowling's limited third person perspective by applying it on three different POVs. For example, Snape: Catherine thinks he's inexplicably mean, Sam likes the man but thinks his attempts at being commanding fall flat whenever he uses what Sam believes must have been slang from Snape's era (see: dunderheads), while Hector thinks he's the best teacher on Earth for reasons other than the ability to have Gryffindors make fools of themselves.

Hehee.
I like the idea of multiple POVs. Rowling spent most of the first three books telling everything from the Gryffindor point of view and only in the last two books did she start providing insight into the pureblood, Voldemort leaning faction, attempting to rationalize why they hold to their beliefs and not simply characterizing them as two-dimensional tradition-bound racists. But by choosing to give all the perspectives from different sides of current issues from the get go it will give readers something to contemplate.

And thanks for the encouragement.
